I am currently shifting into real estate development. Focusing on affordable housing in the inner city to create more affordable homes for rent and purchase to first time home buyers. There is a mentorship that I applied for right before Christmas that starts this week. It is an extremely sought after opportunity, so I really wanted to get into this mentorship. They also help with access to funding for projects once the course is completed to their mentees. So, when I found out a few of my development partners got into the course. I was happy for each one of them but I can't lie, I was a little in my feelings! I sprayed SIMI called on her for her help to get into the mentorship. I kept hearing in my spirit to send them an email. I listened and sent the email, that was last Friday. Monday, NOTHING, Tuesday, NADA! WHAT IS HAPPENING! I couldn't let it go, I told my partner who was accepted into the cohort, that I still didn't hear anything. She was like here's their information "CALL THEM, hang up with me and call now." I ended the call and called the Vice President twice. No answer, so I left a voicemail. Something said to me again, write another email, this time send it to both VP's directly. I wrote what I hoped was a compelling enough email and sent it over last night. This morning I received a response!
They never received my application!(Which made me feel better because at least it wasn't that they saw my application and was like she sucks, denied lol) They made an exception for me only and opened the application for me to apply again before the end of day today! As soon as I got that email, I went to resubmit. YA'll! Why my application was saved in the draft? It never fully submitted even though I did receive a confirmation, just not via email.
All that to say, thank you Simi! She definitely made it happen, it may not always come easy and you may have to push through and do some things you're not comfortable with to get what you want, but I listened to what was being requested of me after asking her for help! She definitely pushed me to continue to persevere. Usually I am extremely laid back, with the motto of what's meant to be will be. But, with this industry lacking Black developers, especially Black women developers. It is extremely reassuring to have my spirit team, and Simi to help me push through! Big thanks Lala for sharing Simi with us! I hope to continue to have her guidance to help create better opportunities for our community with so much uncertainty ahead of us.
Congratulations! I would like the information about your mentorship? If you don’t mind sharing.
